After you graduate

Rules read 19 Aug 2026

What Hungary's own immigration authority currently publishes. Not a ranking, not a guarantee, and not the same as what any agent or forum will tell you. Whether someone actually obtains residence depends on occupation, points, funds and policy that can change between application and graduation.

Work during study

Hungary's National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing (Országos Idegenrendészeti Főigazgatóság, OIF) states directly that a third-country national holding a residence permit for the purpose of studies, a student mobility residence permit, or a student mobility certificate may work during their study period for a maximum of 30 hours a week, and outside their study period (e.g. holidays) full-time for up to 90 days in a year.

Post-study work visa

Residence permit for the purpose of seeking a job or starting a business . Up to 9 months
A holder of a residence permit for the purpose of studies who has successfully completed their studies, where the job or business they want to start in Hungary is suitable for the level of their studies, may apply for this residence permit — submitted in Hungary at least 15 days before the study permit expires. OIF states its validity is capped at 9 months and cannot be extended. During its validity, the holder is exempted from needing a separate work permit if they go on to hold an EU Blue Card or a residence permit for Guest self-employment.

Route to permanent residence

OIF's own factsheet states plainly that a holder of a study-purpose residence permit, student mobility residence permit, or student mobility certificate 'may not be granted a national residence card' (Hungary's main long-term/permanent-residence status for third-country nationals) directly — study years themselves do not count. The realistic route for a graduate runs through the post-study 'seeking a job or starting a business' permit into an employment-based status (e.g. National Card or EU Blue Card), from which the National Residence Card becomes reachable once its own conditions are met: a third-country national who holds a residence permit, interim permanent residence permit, or interim residence card, and who has resided in Hungary legally and without interruption for at least 3 years prior to applying, may be granted a national residence card (a separate, faster route also exists after 1 year for those living as a dependent family member with a Hungarian citizen or long-term resident).

Route to citizenship

Hungary's Ministry of Justice (via its human-rights information portal) describes naturalisation under Act LV of 1993 on Hungarian Citizenship. The general conditions for conventional naturalisation are proper accommodation and income in Hungary, a clear criminal record, no prejudice to public or national security, and passing an examination on the Hungarian constitution in the Hungarian language (with exemptions for, among others, incapacitated persons, anyone 65 or older, and anyone who graduated from a Hungarian-language educational institution). The applicant must already hold a document entitling them to permanent residence in Hungary and be registered at a Hungarian address. The required period of prior residence varies by category: a person with no entitlement to a preferential procedure — the category a typical international graduate with no other tie to Hungary would fall into — may apply after 8 years of residence; someone who was born in Hungary, settled/immigrated there, or received a registration document as a minor, or who is stateless, may apply after 5 years; and the spouse of a Hungarian citizen, the parent of a Hungarian-citizen minor child, a refugee, or an adult adopted by a Hungarian citizen as a minor may apply after 3 years. This dataset found no statement on this page about dual nationality or a requirement to renounce an applicant's original nationality, so no claim is made on that point.

New entry added 19 August 2026. Two Hungarian government domains added to IMMIGRATION_DOMAINS in scripts/verify.mjs: oif.gov.hu (National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, Hungary's immigration authority) and kormany.hu (Government of Hungary's own web presence, cited via its Ministry of Justice human-rights information subdomain emberijogok.kormany.hu, which publishes the Hungarian Citizenship Act's naturalisation conditions in English). inDemandOccupations is left null: no shortage-occupation list specific to this route was found on oif.gov.hu. naturalisationStatus set to 'published-route': the Ministry of Justice page states real, numbered residence-length categories (8/5/3 years) plus language, conduct and income conditions — per the doc comment on ResidencyPathway.naturalisationStatus this field records only whether criteria are published, not how demanding Hungary's constitutional exam or 8-year ordinary route are in practice. This entry chains cleanly end-to-end: study (with 30hrs/week or 90-day work rights) to a 9-month post-study job/business-seeking permit to an employment-based residence status to a National Residence Card after 3 further years to citizenship after 8 years overall for someone with no other qualifying tie to Hungary. citizenshipTerms records 8 years, the period for an applicant with no entitlement to a preferential procedure — the category a graduate with no other tie to Hungary falls into. Shorter periods (5 years for someone born in Hungary or stateless, 3 years for a spouse, parent of a Hungarian child, refugee or adoptee) are category routes. dualCitizenshipAllowed is null: this Ministry of Justice page says nothing about renunciation either way.
