Work during study

A full-time student on a Polish study visa or a temporary residence permit for study purposes may work in Poland without needing a separate work permit at all — the Office for Foreigners states this applies 'also while waiting for the permit for temporary residence for your studies,' provided the temporary-residence application was filed during the visa's validity and was correctly and completely submitted (or corrected in time if it had formal gaps). No maximum weekly-hours figure is stated for this exemption, unlike the numeric caps several other countries in this dataset publish.

Post-study work visa

Temporary residence permit 'for other reasons' for a graduate of a Polish university (Article 186(1)(6), Law on Foreign Nationals) . Up to 9 months
Available to a 'graduate' — defined as a holder of a diploma from first-cycle studies, full-time second-cycle studies, postgraduate studies, or a doctoral school (bachelor's, engineer's, master's, master-engineer's or doctoral title, or equivalent) from a Polish institution — who wants to stay to look for work or start a business. It is granted only once, for 9 months, and the application must be filed in person with the Province Governor (voivode) directly after graduation, during the applicant's legal residence in Poland; the applicant must show medical insurance and (per the Ministry's own regulation on the point) sufficient funds. Once a job is found, graduates of full-time Polish university studies are separately exempted from the standard labour-market test that would otherwise apply to their employer, though the temporary residence permit requirement itself remains.

Route to permanent residence

Poland's Ministry of the Interior and Administration (MSWiA) publishes a specific route into permanent-type status ahead of citizenship, but it is reached only after already holding a permanent residence permit, an EU long-term residence permit, or the right of permanent residence — statuses this entry's postStudyWork and workDuringStudy routes do not themselves grant. The graduate job-search permit described under postStudyWork is a one-off, 9-month temporary permit, not a route to permanent residence on its own; a graduate who finds qualifying work instead needs an ordinary work-and-residence permit, and would need to hold that (or an equivalent long-term status) for the years described under citizenshipRoute below before a Polish permanent-type residence status, EU long-term residence, or citizenship recognition becomes reachable. This dataset found no separate, named 'permanent residency' scheme specific to graduates or skilled workers published by MSWiA or the Office for Foreigners beyond the general residence-permit and citizenship-recognition ladder described under citizenshipRoute.

Route to citizenship

Poland publishes two separate routes to citizenship. 'Recognition' as a Polish citizen (uznanie za obywatela) is the administrative, criteria-based route MSWiA's own page sets out in detail: for someone with no Polish family connection, the shortest published path requires at least 3 continuous years of legal residence held on a permanent residence permit, an EU long-term residence permit, or the right of permanent residence, together with a stable and regular income and the right to occupy a dwelling in Poland (a slower, otherwise similar path exists at 10 years for someone who does not meet the 3-year path's fuller conditions). Every recognition route requires Polish language proficiency at CEFR level B1, officially confirmed, and a voivodeship governor may refuse recognition where it would threaten national defence, public security or public order. A second, separate route — 'conferral' (nadanie) — is a discretionary grant by the President of the Republic of Poland on application, with no published numbered residence or language criteria of its own; this dataset records only the recognition route's published criteria, since conferral is not bound by stated conditions. On dual nationality, Article 3 of the Act on Polish Citizenship states Poland's 'exclusivity principle' directly: a Polish citizen who simultaneously holds another country's citizenship has, before the Republic of Poland, exactly the same rights and obligations as someone holding only Polish citizenship, but may not invoke the other citizenship, or any right or obligation arising from it, with legal effect before Polish authorities. In practice this means Poland does not require a foreign national to renounce their original nationality to become a Polish citizen — it simply treats every Polish citizen as solely Polish for purposes of Polish law, regardless of any other nationality they also hold.
