Student accommodation in Malaysia

• Shared roomMYR 120
• Single roomMYR 240

The same list prices family accommodation separately — Bakti Permai at RM350 for one room and RM450 for two — which is not a single-student rate and is excluded from the range. USM's own central hostel directory page carries no rate at all, so this is the only accommodation figure published anywhere on usm.my that could be found; because it is undated, a reader should confirm it with the Pejabat Pusat Perumahan & Penginapan Universiti ([email protected]) before budgeting on it.

• Type AMYR 210
• Type BMYR 230
• Type CMYR 250
• Type DMYR 270
• H/CAPP (handicap-accessible)MYR 270

Deposit of RM250 required; pre-payment based on selected room type is made each trimester. Rooms include Wi-Fi networking, double-decker beds, study tables, and closets; hostel facilities include a common room with TV, laundry/washing room, and bathroom.

Rooms come with a single bed and mattress, study table and chair, cupboard, book-case, ceiling fan, lights, curtains, window mosquito netting and a dustbin. Each floor has common bathrooms, toilets, a pantry, a water dispenser and a drying area. Hostel facilities include 24-hour security, cafeterias, air-conditioned study rooms, a convenience store and stationery shop, a Public Bank ATM, water heaters, hot and cold water dispensers, self-service laundry machines, a multi-purpose hall with stage, and a covered walkway to the campus. Note there is no Wi-Fi in the rooms — residents use their own data, with free Wi-Fi only in the hostel canteen and study room. Places go first-come, first-served.

• Sharing roomMYR 270 to MYR 300
• Single roomMYR 540 to MYR 600

The lower figures are for a shared room and the higher ones for a single room; within each type the cheaper rate is the room without air conditioning. UPM also runs the Ibnu Battuta / International Transit House for temporary stays at RM1,000 a month, and points students to the Taman Desaminium apartments about 15 minutes from campus at RM500 to RM650 a month.

The first payment is the deposit plus six months' rent — RM3,480 for the cheapest twin-sharing room up to RM8,160 for the superior air-conditioned single. Rooms are subject to availability. The same brochure separately prices off-campus accommodation at INTI's Subang and Penang colleges, which are different institutions from INTI International University at Nilai.

On top of the rent, every room carries a non-refundable RM500 application fee, an RM 3,000 deposit, stamp duty scaled to the rent, and six months' rent in advance. Residents get 24/7 security, live-in Residential Advisors, collaborative study and living spaces, student wellness support, and walking-distance access to the university and to 40+ dining and retail options at Syopz Mall. Taylor's second on-campus residence, U Residence, is priced separately from RM 1,700 (Standard Twin) to RM 3,200 a month.

• 6 person per roomMYR 550
• 2 person per roomMYR 600

The rate is per semester, not per month, and the cheaper figure is for a six-person room. UniKL’s other campuses do not publish rates, so a student heading to a different campus should ask that campus directly.

Fee is inclusive of electrical appliances for one regular semester. Malaysian postgraduate students pay slightly less (RM1,212.50-RM3,000).

Charged per semester, and only for the semesters a student actually lives in the hall. Malaysian students pay RM504 for the same semester, so this is specifically the international rate.

• Room type D (twin-sharing, common bathroom)MYR 2,800
• Room type B2MYR 3,000
• Room type A2MYR 3,600
• Room type D1MYR 4,000
• Room type C1MYR 6,400
• Room type B1MYR 6,800
• Room type A1/EMYR 7,200

The cheapest figure is a twin-sharing room with a common bathroom, the dearest a single room with its own bathroom and pantry. A short semester costs about half. A booking fee of RM1,000 for Block D or RM2,000 for Block E is payable on application and becomes a refundable deposit once a semester’s rent is paid. The rate card UCSI publishes still carries 2023 semester dates, so check the current figure with the accommodation office before budgeting.

• Bilik Double (double room) - UKM bachelor’s student, Malaysian citizenMYR 2.50
• Bilik Single (single room) - UKM bachelor’s student, Malaysian citizenMYR 3.20
• Bilik Single or Bilik Double - UKM bachelor’s student, non-citizen (the same rate either way)MYR 4.50
• Bilik Double (double room) - UKM postgraduate, Malaysian citizenMYR 5
• Bilik Single (single room) - UKM postgraduate, Malaysian citizenMYR 6
• Bilik Single or Bilik Double - UKM postgraduate, non-citizen (the same rate either way)MYR 9

The table is headed 'Kadar Sehari' - a per-day, per-student rate - and it is only a rate table: the page says nothing at all about what the rent covers, so there is no statement either way on electricity, water, Wi-Fi, laundry, meals or access to college facilities. What it does distinguish is room type and who the student is: a non-citizen pays the same whether the room is single or double, while a Malaysian citizen pays less for a double than for a single, and postgraduates pay more than undergraduates at every step.
