What Mexico's own immigration authority currently publishes. Not a ranking, not a guarantee, and not the same as what any agent or forum will tell you. Whether someone actually obtains residence depends on occupation, points, funds and policy that can change between application and graduation.
Work during study
Every international student who will stay in Mexico for more than 180 days needs the residente temporal estudiante visa/card, whatever their nationality. Holding it does not carry work rights automatically, but the holder can separately request a work permit if all of the following are met: a job offer already exists (the student cannot take up independent/freelance activity on this basis); the school itself authorises the student to work; and the work is related to the degree or subject the student is studying. Once granted, the permit is valid for 1 year.

“Todos los estudiantes sin importar su nacionalidad cuando vayan a permanecer en México por una temporalidad superior a los 180 días requieren obtener esta visa. Con la Residencia Temporal Estudiante, también se puede solicitar permiso de trabajo, cumpliendo lo siguiente: Vigencia de 1 año Que exista una oferta de empleo (no podrán dedicarse a actividades independientes) La escuela debe autorizar que puedan trabajar Debe ser un trabajo a fin a la carrera o materia que están estudiando”
Route to permanent residence
Mexico does not publish a distinct post-study job-search visa; a graduate who finds a job-related work permit while still on the student card, or who separately secures an employer-sponsored temporary-resident work visa, becomes an ordinary residente temporal (temporary resident), a status issued for 1 to 4 years at the National Immigration Institute's (INM) discretion. The National Immigration Institute's own procedure for changing status confirms the route onward from there: a foreigner holding temporary-resident status who has completed 4 consecutive years of residence — or who is a retiree/pensioner receiving foreign income, or who qualifies under Mexico's points system — may change their status of stay to residente permanente (permanent resident), on proving the specific grounds and requirements the regulations set for whichever of those routes applies.

“Extranjeros con condición de estancia de residente temporal que cumplió cuatro años consecutivos de residencia, son jubilados o pensionados que reciben sus ingresos del exterior o desean participar en el Sistema de Puntos, podrán cambiar de condición de estancia a residente permanente acreditando los supuestos y requisitos señalados en la normatividad.”
Route to citizenship
Mexican citizenship by naturalisation is governed by the Ley de Nacionalidad, administered by the Secretaría de Relaciones Exteriores (SRE). Article 20 sets the general residence requirement at 5 years immediately before applying, reduced to 2 years for a direct descendant of a Mexican-by-birth national, someone with Mexican-born children, a national of a Latin American country or the Iberian Peninsula, someone the Secretaría judges to have rendered distinguished cultural, social, scientific, technical, artistic, sporting or business service benefiting the nation, or a foreign spouse who has lived together with a Mexican spouse in Mexico for the 2 years before applying; and to 1 year for an adopted child or minor descendant under the parental authority of a Mexican. Critically for StudyPath’s readers, SRE's own procedural page for the naturalisation-by-residence certificate states directly that 'the condition of stay of temporary resident student does not generate residence rights for obtaining Mexican nationality by naturalisation' — years spent in Mexico on a student visa do not count toward the residence requirement at all; only time held as an ordinary temporary resident or permanent resident counts. Applicants must also pass exams showing they speak Spanish, know the country's history, and are integrated into national culture. On the renunciation question, Article 19 requires a naturalising foreigner to make the same formal renunciation and pledge set out in Article 17 of the same law: an express renunciation of the nationality attributed to them, of all submission, obedience and fidelity to any foreign state (particularly the one attributing that other nationality), of any protection foreign to Mexican law and authorities, and of any right international treaties grant to foreigners — alongside a pledge of adherence and obedience to Mexican law. StudyPath found no separate SRE statement confirming whether this renunciation is enforced in a way that actually costs the applicant their original nationality in practice (Mexico cannot control another country's own nationality law), so it reports the renunciation requirement exactly as the Ley de Nacionalidad states it, rather than characterising it as either a real or a symbolic bar to dual nationality.

New entry added 19 August 2026. Domains accepted as a government source here: gob.mx (covering the Instituto Nacional de Migración's tramite pages, the SRE's own ley-de-nacionalidad and portales.sre.gob.mx pages, and the labour-ministry-run mexicoteemplea.gob.mx job-matching site, all *.gob.mx). postStudyWork is left null: no distinct job-search or graduate residence status was found published by INM or SRE — a graduate's route runs through the ordinary work-authorised temporary-resident system described under residencyRoute, the same one any other foreign worker uses. Collection note: portales.sre.gob.mx (the naturalisation-by-residence procedure page, which states the student-visa exclusion directly) and sre.gob.mx/ley-de-nacionalidad (the Ley de Nacionalidad's own text, paginated across several `?start=N` pages by chapter) both returned near-empty extraction to automated fetching and needed the project's real-browser fallback; both were archived from a browser capture from the browser-rendered text. The full text of Article 17 (defining the exact renunciation and pledge wording Article 19 incorporates by reference) lives on a separate paginated URL (sre.gob.mx/ley-de-nacionalidad?start=1) from the Article 19/20 residence requirements cited above — both pages were read in full, but only the Article 19/20 page is the field's formal citation; Article 17's wording is summarised faithfully in prose. inDemandOccupations is left null: Mexico's 'Sistema de Puntos' route to permanent residence (mentioned in the INM change-of-status trámite) was not researched in enough depth to state its criteria honestly, and no shortage-occupation list was found gating the student work-permit or ordinary work-visa routes described above. naturalisationStatus set to 'published-route': the Ley de Nacionalidad publishes real, numbered residence and examination criteria — per the doc comment on ResidencyPathway.naturalisationStatus this field records only whether criteria are published, not how the renunciation requirement plays out for any individual applicant's other nationality. citizenshipTerms records dualCitizenshipAllowed false because that is what the Ley de Nacionalidad itself requires: Article 19 obliges a naturalising foreigner to make the Article 17 renunciation of the nationality attributed to them. Whether that renunciation actually costs the applicant their original nationality is decided by that other country’s law, which Mexico does not control, and StudyPath found no SRE statement on the point — the field reports the requirement Mexican law states, not an assessment of its practical effect. Note also that time held as a temporary resident student does not count toward the 5 years at all.
