University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands)

University of Iceland (Háskóli Íslands), in Reykjavík, Iceland, has 14 undergraduate courses and 7 master's courses listed on StudyPath. None of them charges tuition: every course here is published at zero for international students. UI publishes its own accommodation prices, from ISK 120,000 per month. 13 of the 21 publish an application deadline. Every figure above was read from UI's own published pages and last checked on 1 October 2026.

How UI compares

Against the other universities in Iceland on StudyPath, using each one's verified international fees and its own published housing prices. Universities are only compared with others charging in the same currency (and, for housing, for the same period), so no figure here has been converted. A ~ marks a year worked out from a per-term or whole-course fee.

Living costs. The living-cost figure for a student visa to Iceland is ISK 259,951 per month, on top of tuition (undated figure; read 27 Sept 2026 from island.is). The authority attaches conditions that can change this amount; see them in full on student finance.

Subjects taught at UI

Each one opens every course in that subject, at every university we hold, with the same verified fees.

Accommodation

ISK 120,000per month

Monthly rent the University of Iceland tells students to expect for an individual in Reykjavík, and the entry rent for Students’ Building Association housing across the capital area. The university words it as at least and from, so treat the figure as a floor rather than a typical or top price.

The University of Iceland does not provide or guarantee housing for students. On-campus supply is limited and students often live off campus. It is normal in Iceland to pay a deposit when renting. The university warns students always to have a signed lease and never to pay rent or a deposit to a landlord before signing, except when renting through the Student Housing Office. On its living costs page it puts housing including utilities at typically ISK 100,000 a month and up.

Published by the university itself, not a live listings price. Actual cost depends on room type, availability and when you apply.

Work during study

Iceland's Directorate of Immigration, via the government portal Ísland.is, states that a student residence permit holder may work in Iceland without a separate work permit for up to 60% of full-time employment while studying — a limit that applies to the student's total employment across all employers combined. That 60% cap does not apply during scheduled breaks between academic terms, to someone who has already completed a university degree in Iceland and is residing in the country to seek employment based on their qualifications, or to work that forms part of a formal workplace training or internship programme. Holders must also now demonstrate satisfactory academic progress — completing at least 75% of a full-time course load during the academic year — at every permit renewal, not just the first, and must provide employment information at renewal to confirm they have not exceeded the permitted working hours; the Directorate may request this information at any time and may review or revoke the right to work if the employment doesn't comply.

Post-study work visa

Extended student residence permit after graduation, to seek employment based on qualifications . Up to 18 months
A foreign national who has completed a Bachelor's, Master's or Doctoral degree at an Icelandic university may renew their student residence permit for up to 18 months after graduation to seek employment matching their qualifications — reduced, as of the July 2026 reform, from a previous maximum of up to 3 years. Separately, someone who has completed a doctoral degree in Iceland may instead renew a specialist residence permit for up to 12 months to seek employment based on their specialist expertise, without needing a work permit for that renewal either.

Route to permanent residence

The Directorate of Immigration states, on its own student-residence-permit page, that a student residence permit cannot by itself form the basis for a permanent residence permit — with one specific bridging route: an applicant who has held a residence permit that can itself be the basis for permanent residence (typically a work-based permit) for at least 2 years, and who had previously held a student residence permit for at least 2 years before that, will thereby have resided in Iceland legally for the 4 years permanent residence requires. In other words, study years count only if capped at 2 years and combined with at least 2 further years on a qualifying, non-study permit — pure study time beyond 2 years does not itself advance the permanent-residence clock. Separately, no more than 90 days of total time spent abroad per year is allowed during the qualifying period without breaking eligibility.

“Right to permanent residence permit The permit cannot be the basis for a permanent residence permit except in instances where the applicant has held a residence permit that may be the basis for a permanent residence permit for at least two years, has previously held a student residence permit for at least two years and thus has resided in Iceland legally for at least four years.”

Route to citizenship

Iceland's Directorate of Immigration, via Ísland.is, states that a foreign national can apply for Icelandic citizenship once they have had legal domicile and continuous residence in Iceland for 7 years (an application submitted before meeting this may be rejected for that reason). Shorter qualifying periods apply to specific categories: 4 years of domicile since marriage to an Icelandic citizen of at least 5 years' standing; 5 years of residence since registering cohabitation with an Icelandic citizen of at least 5 years' standing; 2 years of domicile as the child of an Icelandic citizen of at least 5 years' standing; 4 years of domicile for a Nordic citizen; and 5 years of domicile since being granted refugee status or a humanitarian residence permit. On dual nationality, Ísland.is states plainly and with a specific date: 'Iceland allowed dual citizenship on July 1, 2003. Before that time, an Icelandic citizen lost their Icelandic citizenship upon being granted foreign citizenship.' A foreign national naturalising as Icelandic today is not required to renounce their original nationality.

New entry added 19 August 2026. One Icelandic government domain accepted as a government source here: island.is (Ísland.is, the unified Icelandic government services portal, which hosts the Directorate of Immigration's own pages — note the domain is island.is, not the superficially similar utl.is, which resolved during StudyPath’s research to an unrelated content-farm site with no connection to Iceland's actual Directorate of Immigration, worth flagging so a future collector doesn't waste time on it). The dual-citizenship confirmation quoted in citizenshipRoute's value is drawn from a second island.is page (Restoration of Icelandic citizenship, retrieved 2026-08-19T13:47:37.716Z) rather than independently re-cited as a second provenance object, consistent with how other entries on StudyPath describe more supporting detail in prose than a single quote can carry. This entry benefits from unusually current source material: the Directorate of Immigration's own news release documents a major reform that took effect 8 July 2026 (mid-2026, shortly before StudyPath’s collection date), including the reduction of the post-study job-seeking extension from up to 3 years down to 18 months — a recent, material tightening worth flagging to anyone cross-referencing older sources. inDemandOccupations is left null: no shortage-occupation list was found tied to these routes on island.is. naturalisationStatus set to 'published-route': Ísland.is publishes real, numbered residence-length categories for citizenship and an unambiguous, dated statement on dual nationality — per the doc comment on ResidencyPathway.naturalisationStatus this field records only whether criteria are published, not how demanding Iceland's 7-year ordinary route or its 4-year (2+2) permanent-residence bridge are in practice. citizenshipTerms records the general 7-year period. Shorter periods published on the same page are all category routes (marriage to or cohabitation with an Icelandic citizen, being the child of one, Nordic citizenship, or refugee/humanitarian status).
